The Budapest Water Summit: A Sustainable Development Goal on Water

From 8 to 11 October stakeholders from governments, civil society, the private sector, and academia convened in Budapest to participate in discussions on the importance of water for the post-2015 development agenda and the inlcusion of a specific water-related goal therein.

In their "Dashboard Proposal" the governments of Colombia and Guatemala envisage the post-2015 development agenda as being designed around a nucleus of common global goals measured by a set of internationally agreed-on targets and indicators which would be accompanied by more specific targets and indicators geared to national circumstances and priorities.

IISD's Summary of the 4th Session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals

The fourth session of the UN General Assembly Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) took place from 17-19 June 2013, at UN Headquarters in New York. The meeting brought together OWG members, other member states, observers, and representatives from UN agencies and Major Groups. The meeting was devoted to addressing the thematic issues of: (a) employment and decent work for all, social protection, youth, education and culture and (b) health, population dynamics. Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya, and Csaba Körösi, Permanent Representative of Hungary, served as co-chairs.

SIWI launches the Stockholm Statement Digital Forum

In September 2013 the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) will submit the Stockholm Statement to the 68th UN General Assembly. The objective of this paper is to influence and elevate the status of water in the post-2015 development agenda. This open forum exists to facilitate contributions to the Stockholm Statement, which will be calling for a Sustainable Development Goal on Water.

Opening Statement of the International Trade Union Confederation at the Fourth session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals

Beneficial use of science key to post-2015 development

Rapid technological progress has made the elimination of worldwide poverty by 2030 a realistic goal for the post-2015 development agenda, but the challenge now is how best to use these advances, which can also harm sustainable development, says a report by a UN-backed science network.

Addressing this challenge must be a central question guiding the drafting of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) report, published last week (6 June).

SDGs e-Inventory now also available in French and Spanish

The Sustainable Development Goals e-Inventory is now also available in two additional languages, French and Spanish. The multi-language feature enables users to both search for and submit proposals for a post-2015 global goals framework in either English, French or Spanish, thereby increasing the number of stakeholders able to use the tool.

SDSN Releases Post-2015 Report: An Action Agenda for Sustainable Development

The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has published its Report for the UN Secretary-General, entitled An Action Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Report outlines key challenges that should be prioritised in order to achieve sustainable development, suggesting a list of ten possible Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and affiliated targets for post-2015. It proceeds to explain how each of these goals contribute to the ‘four’ dimensions of sustainable development, with good governance including peace and security being the new dimension alongside the conventional social, economic and environmental elements.

EXPERTS URGE WATER'S INCLUSION IN DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Human activities, such as building dams and agricultural irrigation, they say, have fundamentally altered the global water system, threatening ecosystems and a steady supply of fresh water. But a lack of scientific data and monitoring mean there is still no effective global governance of this key resource.

SDGS OWG PROGRAMME OF WORK AND FORMAT FOR MAJOR GROUPS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS' PARTICIPATION

The second session of the UNGA SDGs Open Working Group (OWG) took place on 17-19 April 2013 at UNHQ in New York. The meeting was devoted to conceptualizing the SDGs and the SDG process, and to poverty eradication. Governments are clearly investing in the process as evidenced by the high number of Ambassadors and Ministers who filled Conference Room 4 during the three days of the meeting. SDGs must contain goals on global issues & commitments - G77

Geneva, 18 Apr (Meena Raman) - The Group of 77 and China (G77) has proposed that in the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the United Nations, there must be a significant section on a strengthened Global Partnership for Development which incorporates global commitments to support developing countries in implementing the SDGs.

The OWG elected, as Co-Chairs, Csaba Körösi, Permanent Representative of Hungary, and Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of Kenya, who had served as co-facilitators of the consultations pertaining to the preparations for the first session of the OWG.
