Oft-cited, Bill Gates called the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) “the best idea for focusing the world on fighting global poverty that I’ve ever seen.” [1]
Everyone appears to agree on this point: that the MDGs were a fabulous awareness campaign. The concepts behind each goal seized the world’s attention, making everyone sit up, listen and believe.

New global sustainable development goals (also known as the “SDGs”) are expected to be the centrepiece of the UN post-2015 development agenda.
The Co-Chairs of the UN talks about the new sustainable development goals have identified potential focus areas that the goals could cover. Climate change is one of these areas.
Under the climate change heading, the Co-Chairs mention areas to be considered, including “reaffirming and reinforcing international commitments, such as limiting the increase in global average temperature through equitable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions …”.

It’s a daunting task, trying to summarise a series of viewpoints from eminent researchers and experts on how the development finance landscape has evolved and what it all means for the financing of development beyond 2015. While I doubt I can do justice to all the contributions so far, we need to take stock of the lessons contained in these different viewpoints. I see four key questions that provide real food for thought.
On 9th July 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) formally adopted by consensus the format and the organisational aspects of the high level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF). The forum will replace the existing body for sustainable development within the UN – the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) – which will close down after 21 years of hard work on 20th September, prior to the first meeting of the HLPF on 24th September 2013 (both will take place as part of the beginning of the 68th session of the UNGA).
