New President of the General Assembly (September 2014- September 2015)

The new President of the General Assembly, Mr Sam Kutesa (Uganda), started his year-long term on 16 September. He is the successor to John Ashe (Atigua and Barbuda) and will preside over the final year of the Post-2015 deliberations.

During his opening address Mr. Kutesa announced three post-2015 thematic debates and one high level event for the 69th General Assembly. The purpose of the events is to bring together member states and representatives from civil society to discuss critical topics related to the global goals framework. Details about the events are as follows:

  • High-Level thematic debate in February 2015 on the means of implementation for the post-2015 development agenda.
  • High-Level thematic debate in March 2015 on Advancing Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in the post-2015 development agenda.
  • High-Level Thematic Debate in April or May 2015 to address the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes and Strengthening Cooperation between the United Nations and Regional Organizations.
